The Broken Road – The Roommate From Hell (Maybe Literally)

Sometimes due to our circumstances we allow people to enter our lives that show us that evil truly does exist in the world.  As I look back on this short period of time, I can see that some people in the world have no desire to change from their evil ways. I allowed a demon into my life who desired nothing but to bring everyone down around him.  His mission was to destroy all happiness and tranquility that were in his vicinity.

tweedledee-tweedledum-2He came as the package deal of the roommate that I truly believe stole my rented vehicle.  The two of them together was like watching two grumpy old men bitching about their lives not realizing that all of the bad things in their lives were because of their own actions.  They were a perfect pair.  It was like Tweedle-ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and Tweedle-Angry.

Let’s Call Tweedle-Angry, Steve and we have already met Tweedle-ADD, John.  John was the bread winner in this relationship from his drunk Hummer accident while playing soldier in the military police.  I have all the respect in the world for the military and what they do, but there are some bad eggs.  He was getting close to $5,200 a month which in Costa Rica is close to a fortune with no real expenses other than rent, food and transportation.  However, John normally spent close to $1000 more that his monthly allowance on drugs and alcohol.

After his continued drug related instances of which I knew nothing about, he needed a place to stay so he and Steve came a knocking.  I had two rooms downstairs and away from the main house that I was able to rent and thought that this would be a nice way to have some extra cash towards rent.  From day one, I knew I had made a mistake but it was at a point where I could not really do anything to change it at the moment.

Steve and John would spend their days drinking and were probably doing cocaine, but the drugs were hidden from me.  Steve had told John that he needed to be in charge of his money when it came in. There is no honor among thieves.  Although John said that he would turn his money over to Steve, it was obvious that he had no intention of giving up his drug money to the angry pit-bull.

The money came in on the 19th, the last day of the month at midnight.  Steve knew this and on payday he would be following John around like a stalker.  He needed his cut like a drug addict trying to get his fix.  But what was his cut for? For his friendship? For his angry attitude? For the fact that he was trying to help John stop doing drugs? All of the reasons that came out of Steve’s mouth were absolute bullshit. The only reason he wanted that money was for him.  He felt like he was entitled to this money for some God-knows-why reason.  Is that where the world is now? People feel like they do not have to work to be given compensation? All I tried to do was stay out of the entire situation and continue working on my own projects, but then things started disappearing.

I had lived in the house for over a year and during that entire time not one thing had been taken Stealingfrom the garage.  Although there were not that many things of value, there were things that could be pawned for a minimal amount of money, like a generator and some tools.  One by one, these items vanished and the first person to notice they were gone was Steve.  On the day they would be missing he immediately would report the stolen item to me and blame someone else.  There was a problem however. The only person that was in and around the house during the times that this were taken was him.  When a 250 pound generator came up missing and the only person who knew about it and has a vehicle to move it reports it stolen, then the suspicion lies with them.  I have seen too many episodes of CSI to now use common sense.  The person that he kept blaming was a friend of mine that would have had neither use for nor ability to steal said items.  When everything is fine until a person shows up and then things start happening then it is easy to deduct who the culprit is.

After John left in the middle of the night on the day his money came in, the anger inside was awoken, the desperateness of his situation became clear and the fact that no one wanted him around was very obvious.  Why would anyone not want to have a guy around that woke up each morning blaming the world for the problems he caused in his own life? (Sarcasm)

It was two weeks before rent was due again and I was about 95% sure that this broke idiot was not going to be able to come up with it; seeing that his bread winner had now run away.  Every day it was the same story.  He said he was a professional marijuana grower in the USA and had fields of it, and that the only reason he did not have money was because he got screwed out of the farm, so he wanted t set up shop on in Costa Rica. For anyone that has any knowledge of how the drug cartels work, you cannot just start growing without their permission and you will have to pay them a % to set up shop.  You cannot be a random gringo with half ass street Spanish and start growing fields of weed in the country.  You are going to be busted by the OIJ or killed by the cartels right before your first harvest.

I, of course let him believe that I thought his stories were true because he believed them whole-heartedly and there was no sense arguing with an insane person. All it would have done was to spark his anger and a 30 – 60 minute yelling session would ensue about how I did not know what I was talking about. This is what happened when anyone confronted him about the items being stolen from the garage.  As we all know when someone begins yelling and reacts in a defensive way like he did, they are lying and have been caught in their lie.  Nothing angers a childish imbecile more than someone using common sense to show they are full of crap.

About a week before the rent was due for the angry, angry, Steve, I was enjoying doing some work at my computer and for once it was quiet at the house as Steve was not yelling at someone on the phone for no apparent reason other than they did not want to believe Steve’s lies.  All of a sudden, downstairs there was yelling and angry Steve shouting.  Then two shots were fired!  I quickly ran to my front door and locked it just in case.  A few minutes later Steve was knocking at the door saying that he had fired shots at two Nicaraguans that were trying to stealing things. I responded with, “Well, that was an interesting way to be startled while doing work.”

”You should be thanking me,” said Steve.  What a complete idiot.  There was not one functioning brain cell in his head anymore.

facing demonsWhen John left so did Steve’s financing on his lazy lifestyle.  I found out later that even his own brother had kicked him out of his house as he could not handle Steve’s behavior anymore.  When your own family members are putting you out on the street and have given up trying to support you then you know there is a problem.  I know, I got to the some point with my family. They stopped believing my lies and instead of being a man and changing my ways, I ran away.  I was so selfish and stuck in my addictive behaviors that I decided to continue my behavior in another country instead of trying to address my problems in the USA.  I knew that this was exactly what Steve and John were doing.  I saw John reading the email he sent to his ex-wife about how he had given up doing drugs and was clean and sober now. I saw Steve talk to his kids each night trying to convince them and others that knew him that they had changed when it was not true. I tried to do the same with my family when I was partying like a rock star in Costa Rica.  No matter how much we try to convince others, we know inside we are living a lie, and this causes anger and depression to be a continual part of our lives.

It was time for rent and I already knew what was going to happen. Drama followed this dimwit wherever he went and asking him to pay his share for having a place to live would be like asking for his kidney.

“Are you going to have the rent tomorrow?” I asked.

“I have had nothing but respect for you and your house since I have moved in and now there is a dog here and I am allergic,” responded Steve.

“Are you going to have the rent tomorrow?” I asked again.

“No I am moving out.  I am getting out of here” said Steve.

The night of the move came and our hero Steve decided to drink.  When you give an already angry and violent person alcohol it can only make things worse.

“I am going to have my brother come and get my things tomorrow. He is not going to have a problem is he? Hey, remember that bet we made a while back? Can you give me that money?” angry Steve asked.

“Are you going to help pay for electricity or other utilities?” I responded.

“F&*% you, you pussy,” he shouted as he began chasing me with a machete.

I ran upstairs and locked the door behind me as the machete blade cut through the solid wood door.

“You are a pussy. Do you think you can live here with all the friends I have here?” Steve yelled from downstairs as I called the police.

The police came and did a report about 45 minutes after they were called, but Steve was gone forever as he ran away drunk with his tail between his legs. The exorcism of the demon from the house had been performed.  It was finally time to move into a peaceful time in my life, and pick and choose wisely who would be there for the ride.
